Code: FA1011

Dimensions:

W: 21.5cm (8.5")H: 4cm (1.6")D: 19.5cm (7.7")

A fabulously over-the-top New Hall dessert dish with central painted scene of "The Visit of Dr. Syntax to Widow Hopeful at York", one of a series of dessert plates and dishes with varying scenes of Dr. Syntax, all classes as pattern number 2679. The berry shaped dish with shaped gilded edge and finely moulded and pierced gilded bow handle to one side. The walls are moulded with floral designs, left in the white, with the remainder decorated in a mazarine blue ground with salmon and gilt decoration and four octagonal reserves painted with garden flowers. Marked to the reverse in red script No. 2679 and the title of the scene. c.1823-1827.

Reference: see the V&A reference C.41-1987 for a similar circular plate with a different scene of Dr Syntax, also pattern number 2679.

It measures 21.5cm (8 1/2") by 19.5 (7 5/8") wide and 4cm (1 1/2") high.

Condition is good overall but there has been an antique staple repair to 2 neighbouring sections of the wall, minimally noticeable from the front due to the elaborate decoration. No other damage or restoration and surface wear is very light, just  minor wear to the gilding here and there and a couple of very small and minor marks to the main scene.
