A very fine and rare early Derby porcelain sauce boat, c.1760-65, decorated in underglaze blue with Chinese scene of a fisherman standing on a shore against a landscape of willow trees and pagodas with rocks in the water. The moulded body has raised scrolls and arabesques shaping the reserves and a relief moulded pair of pears and flower below the filled blue gadrooned rim. The foot is decorated with a hexagonal cell pattern and a similar frieze runs inside the rim. The whole inside is also ornately decorated with a large chrystanthemum inside the base and floral sprays on all inner walls. A further chrysanthemum to the front and simple flowers down the handle. Patch marks to the base.

A similar sauce boat is held with the V&A, Reference C.27-1960.

It measures 20cm (8") long, 9.5cm (3 3/4") wide and 10cm (4") high.

Condition is very good; there is a very fine tight hairline running partway across the foot but this doesn't affect use, it is fully watertight. No chips, or other damage or and repair or restoration and surface wear is minimal. The painted decoration is fine and crisp all over with no blurring.
