Pair Victorian Staffordshire Porcelain Lion & Lioness Figures C.1840

SOLD

Code: FA0531

Lovely and unusual mid 19th century porcelain figures of a recumbent lion and lioness with her cub on moulded green bases to represent grassy mounds. Decorated in the round with a gilded band around the bottom of the front of the bases. Very finely detailed modelling and decoration.

Referenced in English Porcelain Animals by D.G. Rice, plate 31.

The lion measures 2 3/4" (7cm) high and the base is 4 1/4" (10.5cm) by 3" (7.5cm) wide. The lioness is 2 1/2" (6.5cm) high with a similar sized base.

Condition is very good with no damage or restoration to the female. The male has a branched impact hairline running under the base, and part way up with his body. There is a fine hairline across the end of his tail and his front left leg has had a break and been neatly repaired. Again no restoration I can detect. Surface wear is very light; slight rubbing to the black enamel on their noses and the claws on the lioness' front fee
