Rare Coalport Coalbrookdale Flower Encrusted Tea Kettle

SOLD

Code: FA0647

A rare John Rose Coalport porcelain flower encrusted ornamental tea kettle, c.1830, of Coalbrookdale style. Pretty rococo handle with scrolled sections in pale green and gilt. The body is beautifully painted with fine bouquets of flowers and butterflies and applied with delicately modeled flowers and leaves. The spout, around the rim and edge of the cover are decorated with gilded patterning and the cover is surmounted with a rose shaped knop. The kettle originally would have come with a stand and is refenced in Coalport & Coalbrookdale Porcelains by Godden, page 271, plate 180, and in Coalport by Messenger, page 209, plate 167.

It measures 20cm (8") long, 15cm (6") wide and 14cm (5 1/2") high.

Condition is excellent with no damage or restoration bar a few minor chips to some of the petals. The base is unglazed and uneven which is unusual but I think it unlikely to have been ground down as this would have then been level and it would be highly unusual to choose to go into the body of a piece. In photographs I have seen of a few other examples they also do not appear to have any greater depth of base than this one so I think it more likely to be original. It is documented that the base of the original stand would have been finished and marked. Very light surface wear, a small section of faded gilding near the rim and a few tiny paint losses to a few flowers underneath the belly.
