Early 19th Century Coalport Commemorative Ironbridge Porter Mug C.1825

SOLD

Code: FA0757

Nice early 19th century large Coalport porter mug with puce printed scene of the Ironbridge on one side and Buildwas Abbey on the other. Personalised initials WM in gilt have been decorated between the scenes and the shaped strap handle with inner spur has gilded decoration down the back and to the terminals and the rim and foot are also gilded.

Unmarked, dated c.1825-35, illustrated in Godden, Coalport & Coalbrookdale Porcelains, plate 171.
There was a modern reproduction of this design following the 200 year anniversary of the Ironbridge in 1979 and quite a few around although they are clearly marked to the base. This is a 19th century original piece complete with original dedication initials.

It measures 10.5cm (4 1/8") high, 9.8cm (3 7/8") rim to handle and 14cm (5 1/2") rim to handle.

Condition is very good with no damage or restoration. There is a very little rubbing to the gilt on the rim but surface wear in the main is very light.
