Pair Derby Porcelain Ranelagh Dancers Figural Candlesticks Figures

SOLD

Code: FA0805

Large pair of 18th century Derby porcelain figural candlesticks modelled as the "Ranelagh" dancers, set on heavy scrolled bases, decorated in puce pink and gold with a spreading bocage either side of them, wrapping around the base of the candle holders. Finely robed with elaborate costumes and beautifully decorated in bright enamels.

Patch marks to the base, c.1765. The candle sconce on the gentleman's figure has been replaced with a matched Derby sconce attached with a metal tie as an old alteration.

They measure 26cm (10 1/4") - 27.5cm (10 3/4") high, 15cm (6") - 16.5cm (6 1/2") wide and 11.5cm (4 1/2") deep. They weigh 2.7kg together.

Condition is very good overall with a few points to note. The female has a very fine and neat repair to her neck which is near to invisible (I have attached lots of close ups of this area for you to see) and also some very fine fabrication of some of the skirt below the candle sconce. The male as I have said has an antique repair to replace the candle sconce with another Derby sconce. A loss to the tip of one of the feathers in his cap and a few small losses to the bocage but overall this is in very good order. Very light surface wear, the enamels and gilding are nice and bright. There is some cracking in the glaze on the female's hat at the back and a very small chip to the base of the male. For figures of this type and size they have come through the years very well.
