A large Derby figure of Winter after the series by Meissen modelled by Johann Friedrich Eberlein. Standing on a scrolled base, it depicts a man with a beard and just a fur-lined shawl for clothing, standing beside a small brazier, contorting with the cold whilst a putto stands to one side chopping wood. c.1770.

Reference: Derby Porcelain by Twitchett, plate 56, Derby Porcelain The Golden Years by Rice, plate 87.

It measures 25cm (9 3/4") high, 13cm (5") wide and 11cm (4 1/4") deep. It weighs 990g.

Condition is very good; the putto has lost his axe handle and his right index finger has been professionally restored. The tips of the branches to the man's right are missing the tips and there are a couple of very minor chips to the leaves of the small bocage at the back and the tips of a few of the flames in the brazier. No other damage or restoration. Surface wear is minimal but there are some craze lines in the glaze of the "skin" areas. There are 2 firing lines under the base.
