19th Century Anglo-Indian Coromandel Sewing / Work Box

Code: FA0594

SOLD

Very nice 19th century Anglo-Indian coromandel wood sewing box of serpentine shape with 2 lift out trays with lidded compartments. The upper tray has lids inlaid with ebony, engraved ivory and silver wire and the lower level lids with specimen wood inlay. The lid has an inset carved elephant in a ring shape cartouche.

It measures 27.5cm (10 7/8") long, 17.5cm (6 7/8")wide and 12cm (4 3/4") high.

Condition is very good with just small signs of age and use. Some of the original brass rings to the lids and tray haven been lost and replaced sympathetically with coloured cord and ribbon and a few of the struts inside the corners of a couple of the boxes are missing but all have at least 3 so the lids all sit nicely and these can easily be replaced. A few marks inside the sandalwood trays.
