Charming little facet cut ruby glass vinaigrette with silver gilt mount in it's original silk lined pink velvet egg shaped case. The lid hinges open to reveal the pretty engraved grille and the whole unscrews to reveal the original sponge inside in order to refill.
The lid has a suspension loop with is marked with the lion passant but the rest of the lid is unmarked as is common with these pieces, but tests for silver and dates to c.1880. The silk inside has the retailer details printed for A. A. Thornton of Kettering.
The vinaigrette measures 1 3/4" (4.5cm) long minus the loop and 7/8" (2.3cm) wide. The case measures 2 1/2" (6.5cm) long and 1 3/4" (4.5cm) wide.
Condition is very good with no damage to the glass and just a few small dints and pinpricks to the lid associated with age and use. The gilding has been rubbed from the outside of the lid but is good elsewhere. The case is in very good condition also.
