A fine 18th century Vienna porcelain coffee can and saucer decorated in a neoclassical style painted in en grisaille enamel and gilt. A very finely painted central portrait profile of a gentleman is to the cup, and a lady to the saucer, both with neoclassical style framing. The rims with a geometric frieze intersected by roundels, again in grey and gilt. The saucer unusually has a gilt band running around the foot which cannot be seen except from below. The can is slightly tapering and has a sharply angular handle with grooved sides and quatrefoil floral shped upper terminal. Both pieces marked underglaze with the bindenschild. c.1780.
The cup measures 6.2cm (1 7/16") high and 6.7cm (2 5/8") rim to rim. The saucer measures 13.7cm (5 3/8") wide and 2.9cm (1 1/8") high.
In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and very minor handling wear.
