Code: FA1467
A very fine and ornate George III silver candle snuffer stand with cast moulded rim with scrolls, gadrooning and roses. Set on 4 scrolled feet and with shaped raised handle with thumb rest and flower detail. The surface decorated with arabesques and flowers and a central engraved coat of arms in a shaped cartouche of a stag at gaze to the right hand side and three unusual symbols to the left against a hatched background, which I am yet to identify. They look a bit like bee hives with a spout to one side and a lozenge shaped base or opening; if anyone has any suggestions I should be very pleased to hear them.
Hallmarked for London 1817, maker Samuel Whitford II or Samuel Wheatley.
It measures 23.5cm (9 1/4") wide, 10.5cm (4 1/8") deep across the rim and 6cm (2 5/16") high. It weighs a very substantial 373g / 12.0ozt.
In excellent condition.
