Unusual Victorian Sterling Silver & Glass Apple Sauce / Preserve Jar

Unusual Victorian Sterling Silver & Glass Apple Sauce / Preserve Jar

Code: FA1511

SOLD

A very fine quality Victorian preserve / sauce pot formed as an apple with a very heavy glass jar base and mounted with a silver collar with hinged silver cover nicely shaped as the top of the apple complete with curving stalk. The base of the jar is fluted to the polished pontil to represent the lower shape of the apple. Full hallmarks to the collar for Birmingham 1894, makers Norton & White. Partial marks to the cover and design number RD226271 stamped on the inner rim of the collar.

It measures 11.2cm (4 3/8") high and 9.5cm (3 3/4") wide. It weighs a whopping 1140g.

In very good condition: there has been a repair at the join of the stalk and the cover. There has been a chip inside the jar at the rim between the glass and the silver which has been filled so doesn't affect use and is not visible with the cover closed. One small nick to the side but no other issues with the glass. No dents to the silver and minor handling wear, the edge of the maker's mark is partially rubbed but the rest are fine.
