Very nice pair of large Victorian silver place card holders. Clearly custom made with a set of entwined initials of RW in the art nouveau naturalistic style being the main feature of the pieces designed to be viewed clearly once the card is inserted. This front plate is on a sprung hinge to snap back against the back plate and hold the card in place. Set on heavily weighted, plain curved bases.
Made by Sampson Mordan & Co., hallmarked to the bases, front and back plates, London 1899. A lovely gift for any RWs out there but also very pretty pieces in their own right.
The measure 8.5cm (3 3/8") wide, 3.5cm (1 3/8") front to back and 4.7cm (1 7/8") high. They weigh 445g (bases weighted).
Condition is very good. One has been neatly repaired right at the base of the back-plate. Light surface wear, clear hallmarks and the hinged front-plates spring back well.
