Fabulous, unusual and rare Choisy-Le-Roi faience pottery soup tureen by Hippolyte Boulenger & Co. Marked to the base as the Tai pattern, it features images of fish, crabs and frogs in cobalt blue. The lid features water snails and is mounted with a moulded exotic lizard or something similar but water based! Set up on tripod feet formed as odd looking monopodic creatures and with elephant head handles on each side. A fabulous eclectic piece, super modelling of the animal features and lovely design to the body. Dating from c.1860s.
It measures 10" high including lid, 7" without, and 13 1/2" wide across the handles, and 9 3/4" at the widest part of the bowl.
Condition is excellent; there is a very small chip to one tusk of one of the elephants but no other damage or restoration to the body or mouldings.
